Roger Davies, taking a moment to search through his thoughts for a word, smiled. It had been a lackadaisical kind of day. Nothing appeared exactly right. Davies was intent on writing a letter for his best friend Jacob Stevens.

Stevens, seeking employment, had asked Davies for a character reference. Davies, staring at his laptop computer screens, had been sitting at his desk for at least three hours before the first word had been written.

“Exceptional doesn’t come close to defining Jacob Stevens” Davies wrote before deleting it and writing “Jacob Stevens is one of the most professional people I know.”
