BBC One’s long-running daytime period dramedy Father Brown, with 11 seasons under its metaphorical belt, returned to our device screens on Friday, 10 January 2025.

The tenth season finale, in many ways, left numerous fans with hopes of a Christmas wedding. A Father Brown 2024 Christmas Special, even though we got a two-part Sister Boniface Christmas Special, didn’t happen. The absence of such a Christmas Special left fans wanting to see more. Which direction will the long-running daytime dramedy take our favorite characters?

The 12th season premiere episode, Ian Barber’s “The Battle of Kembleford”, delivers the kind of content series fans have come to expect of the long-running dramedy. It is unquestionably one of the better season premieres we have witnessed in quite some time.

Barber’s “The Battle of Kembleford”, from a teleplay penned by Dan Muirden, sees the series titular Father Brown investigate a medieval murder committed at a battle re-enactment.

The 12th season premiere instalment, further to the series regulars, guest stars Denis Lawson, Richard David-Caine, Nicholas Burns, Melissa Johns and Luke Allen-Gale. Lawson, David-Caine, Burns, Johns and Allen-Gale respectively portray Colin Byers, Walter Sullivan, Tyrone Higgs, Frank Derbyshire, Cecily Debyshire and Dr. Alexander Manning.

Simply because he is Detective Chief Inspector Edgar Sullivan’s father, in future episodes, Walter Sullivan will make his presence felt. Tom Chambers, playing DCI Edgar Sullivan, recently spoke about working with Lawson.

“Sullivan’s father has always been an overriding presence, he’s always made him feel inferior and felt overshadowed by him,” going on the record, Chambers said in a press release. “In real life, Denis Lawson is absolutely hilarious, he’s a man of many tales, he’s always got a story to tell. He’s also extremely fun and is joyful company to be with.”

Mark Williams, Claudie Blakley, Ruby-May Martinwood, Tom Chambers and John Burton, the current series regulars, respectively portray Father Brown, Mrs. Isabel Devine, Miss Brenda Palmer, Detective Chief Inspector Edgar Sullivan and Sergeant Daniel Goodfellow.

Father Brown, whilst it is seen in the British Isles via BBC One and BBC iPlayer, is primarily viewed in the United States on PBS.
