“The constable told you I’d be down to see you,” Desk Sergeant Richard Gough, in a matter-of-fact tone of voice, said.
Gough, liking the sound of his own voice, spoke more to himself than he did with anyone else. He thought that would be the only way he could engage in an educated conversation.
“I’ve come to put you to good use,” with a slightly off-putting grin, Gough said. “Drop your trousers, spread your legs, and put your hands against the wall. … Do you know what is coming?”
“You are,” after a slight pause, I responded.
“That’s right,” Gough replied.
