“Variety is the spice of life,” in conversation with Detective Ed Greene, D.C.I. Ed Hopkins said, “and that isn’t just a phrase for everyday usage.”

The two police detectives, taking a moment for coffee, sat in their favourite coffee shop. There aren’t many independent coffee shops in the city. Franchises dominate local communities.

“How are you doing?” asked Greene. “Is everything ok?”

“I’m fine,” Ed responded. “Sam’s death came as a shock. He was a fairly good kid. Too trusting. Sam, because he always helped others, thought people would help him if he needed it.”

They sat with their coffee.
