I don't know why... Your reference to a goldfish reminded me of episodes from The West Wing. Josh Lyman, in passing had told journalist Danny Concannon, White House Press Secretary J.C. Cregg like goldfish. Concannon really liked Cregg. He bought her a goldfish for her office. Little did he realise, when Lyman was talking about goldfish, he meant the cracker. There was nothing in the way he said goldfish that suggested cracker.
