Detective Constable Simon Phillips was at the Beckett residence when his cell phone rang. D.C.I. Ed Hopkins was calling him from New York.
“Sir,” having answered the call, Phillips said. “I see you’ve been informed of the situation.”
“I have,” responded Ed. “What happened?”
“It appears Sam miscalculated a response for a request for help,” Phillips said. “Sam had previously helped other individuals and had thought the same help world have been afforded him. He was wrong. I guess the pain of rejection was just too much for him.”
The silence on the other end of the line was deafening.
