Personal Reflection
Will the real Shain Ellison Thomas please stand up?
In considering how I might approach the writing of this assignment, I am reminded of particular lines from William Shakespeare’s play As You Like It.[i] Shakespeare writes:
All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts,
We have many voices just as we wear many hats throughout our respective lifetimes. The language we use, the way we construct the sentences we write, is most telling. Consider for a moment the poem Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night:[ii]
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
When poets write of death, the writing is invariably reminiscent of a serene tranquillity most profound. There is a distinct presence of rage in how Welsh poet Dylan Thomas put pen to paper. To a certain degree, my own true voice has a modicum of rage frequently flittering through my thoughts.
My thoughts, whilst many people are only capable of seeing black and white, take form in varying shades of grey. When I look in the bathroom mirror, I see the darkest of greys.
