Running isn’t about being the best…

The Best Days of Our Lives…

Matthew James Fletcher is someone that has been either running away from or towards something. Fletcher, whilst he always knew exactly what he was running away from, never fully understood his final destination. He never actually knew what he was running towards because, for him, the future had not yet been defined.

Running, however, played a significant part of Fletcher’s life during his school days. Cross country and long distance running had definitely been his jam. Short distances and sprinting, for the most part, were definitely not for him. Fletcher had not the ability to sprint.

The secondary school Fletcher attended, The John Hunt School, had two scheduled sports days per academic year. The first sports day, entirely track and field, wasn’t something Fletcher had ever enjoyed. His cup of tea, the second of the two days, was the half-marathon. This is the day Fletcher enjoyed more than any other day of the year. It allowed him to show of his running abilities.

Fletcher, in his own way, always understood running had never been about being the best. It, for him, had always been about the pursuit of his personal best.
