Raymond Carter, knowing his life is not a proxy for someone else’s curiosity, had reached the end of the road.

He felt, as he looked at an unopened medications bottle, there were no more options. Nothing else. His life’s journey was in the rear-view-mirror.

Carter grabbed his medications and a glass of water but before he could take any pills, unexpectedly, the doorbell rang.

Thomas Telford, Carter’s school friend, was on the doorstep.

“I was about to have a glass of wine.” Carter told his friend. “Would you care to join me?”

“Why not!” Telford responded. “Why not indeed!”

Depression comes in many forms and, as we have seen, can leave people feeling there is no hope. Hopelessness invariably leads to despair. You are not alone.

If you or someone you know are having thought of self harm, and you’re in the UK, call the Samaritans Helpline Number on 116–123 or the emergency services on 999 or 911. Curiously, as an emergency services number, 911 does work in the UK.
