“It’s not a question of whether the suspect is lying,” Dr. Emil Skoda said. “It’s why. What’s the reason for the lying?”

Detectives Jeff Randall and Marty Hopkirk, appearing perplexed by Skoda’s comment, understood exactly where the psychiatrist was coming from. Rational, in more ways than one, thought is Skoda’s cup of tea. There is no getting around Skoda’s understanding of the human mind.

“What do you suggest?” Hopkirk asked Skoda.

“I need to speak with Phillip Bailey some more,” responded Skoda. “I need to get a feel for his mindset.”

Randall, looking at Hopkirk, simply smiled.
